Small size events still need big organisation

Wednesday, October 5, 2011

People with their finger on the pulse out there in event-land will know that there is a wave of ‘boutique’ festivals popping up with increasing regularity. The numbers of people these events cater for are so small that their guests are practically invitation only. Once you’re there, organisers promise an intimate experience and the chance to really connect with people as well as no queues for all the important things. When you get an event like this right it can be one of those experiences that people remember for the rest of their lives. But from an event producer’s perspective, does a smaller festival mean less event organisation workload? Sadly not.

The bar still needs to open (with the appropriate liquor license), the bands need a stage to play on, the toilets need to be stocked, electrical leads need to be tested, BBQ staff need to somewhere to wash their hands, the list goes on. And with so many costly non-negotiables involved with running an event, event organisers have to weigh up their desire for an intimate event with the reality that smaller crowds mean smaller budgets.

Have you ever run a small event? EM would love to hear about your experience.
